3 Arrested in Fatal Shooting of 30-Year-Old Crown Heights Man, Police Say

CROWN HEIGHTS — Three people have been arrested and charged in the beating and fatal shooting of a man on Franklin Avenue last week, police and sources said.

The three defendants — two women and one man — each face various assault and weapons charges in the killing of Dion James, 30, who was shot in the back after a dispute with a group of assailants at the corner of Union Street on June 26, sources said.

Ebony Rivera, 20, and Sequarie Chambers, 23, both of Crown Heights, have each been charged with gang assault in the incident for attacking James before the fatal shots were fired.

Rivera was arraigned on the charges a day after the killing and released, court records show. Chambers faces an additional charge of criminal possession of a weapon and remains in custody on $15,000 bail, records show.

Police also arrested Crown Heights resident Stephari Joiles, 21, who was charged with criminal possession of a weapon for pulling a gun out of her purse and handing it to James's killer, according to court records.

It’s still unclear who pulled the trigger.

Joiles was arraigned on June 27 and released on June 30 on $15,000 bail, Department of Correction records show.

No attorney information was immediately available for Rivera, Chambers or Joiles.

Police continue to search for suspects in the incident.
