MIDTOWN — An assailant slashed a man in an unprovoked attack near the Port Authority bus terminal early Wednesday morning then fled, according to the NYPD.

The attacker approached the unidentified 36-year-old victim on the northwest corner of 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue about 2:30 a.m. in front of the Duane Reade pharmacy, police said.

The suspect approached the victim with a cutting instrument — police said they could not determine whether or not it was a knife — and cut the victim. Then he fled, and the victim also ran.

The injured man was transported to Bellevue Hospital after the incident where he received 20 stitches to the neck and was listed in stable condition, police said.

Police know the identity of the assailant, who they said has been arrested at least 16 times. He was wearing all black clothing with facial hair, according to the NYPD.

"We don't know if it was payback," the NYPD said.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
