WEST VILLAGE — A man tried to steal more than $23,000 from an unlocked safe in the Hornblower cruise ship company's Pier 40 office, police said.

Police said the 27-year-old man was spotted on surveillance camera, and then caught by police outside 353 West St. with a bag in his hand a little after 4 a.m. on May 18.

Police responded after alarms went off when the man broke in, a Hornblower spokesman said.

He dropped the bag, police said, and an officer picked it up and opened it to find more than $23,000 in cash.

The man was charged with grand larceny in the third degree and burglary in the third degree. His attorney declined to comment. A judge had him held on bail of $20,000 cash or bond.

The company was previously robbed in July 2015 as well, police said.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of the story incorrectly identified the thief as being a Hornblower employee. The story has been corrected.
