HUDSON SQUARE — An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer died Friday after being found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Pier 40 in Manhattan Friday morning, police said.

Police said the 42-year-old man was found some time before 11:30 a.m. at West and Clarkson streets and was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police said they did not know who found him.

ICE has an immigration courthouse not far from Pier 40 on Varick Street. The New York Post said he shot himself with his service weapon.

“Tragically, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officer from the New York field office suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and has passed away," the agency said in a statement. "The agency is not releasing further details pending notification of the officer’s next of kin. ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the matter and coordinating with the New York Police Department on the investigation.”
