BROOKLYN SUPREME COURT — A shooting suspect escaped custody during a court date Tuesday by giving a captain for the Department of Correction a false name, according to officials.

Layquan Johnson, 22, appeared inside 320 Jay St. about 10:15 p.m. on an attempted murder charge for a non-fatal shooting in Crown Heights.

Johnson was charged with shooting a man in the leg outside the Albany Houses, on Troy and St. Marks avenues, Dec. 9 about 9:15 p.m. The victim suffered nerve damage to his leg.

Johnson was charged with attempted murder, criminal use of a firearm and assault and ordered held on $250,000 bail at his arraignment.

He was making a pre-trial appearance Tuesday night when he escaped, the Brooklyn DA's Office said.

Police described Johnson as standing about 6-foot-3, weighing 220 pounds and last seen wearing a grey sweatshirt, dark pants and light sneakers.

The DOC has suspended the captain, according to a spokesman for the agency.

“Any erroneous release is unacceptable and this incident is under investigation,” spokeswoman Eve Kessler said.

Anyone with information of Johnson's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
