FORT GREENE — One person was seriously hurt when a fire broke out in a Fort Greene apartment building Tuesday morning, officials said.

A toaster that was left on and unattended sparked a fire in an empty 10th-floor apartment at 475 Carlton Ave., near Atlantic Avenue, about 10:38 a.m., according to building staff.

The apartment's tenant was in the building's outside courtyard at the time, said the building's manager, Sharon Richards.

One person in the building, whose identity wasn't immediately released, had to be taken to an area hospital in serious condition after the fire, officials said.

The blaze was under control by 11:08 a.m., officials said.

THe Red Cross was assisting two people who were displaced by the fire, according to an official with the relief agency, Robert Brander.
