9 People Hurt as Fire Tears Through 3 Brooklyn Homes, FDNY Says

BROOKLYN — Nine people were hurt — one seriously — when a large fire tore through three homes and burned a church in Cypress Hills Sunday evening, FDNY officials said.

The blaze broke out behind a three-story home at 270 Arlington Ave., near Linwood Street, about 6:26 p.m. and spread to the buildings on either side, an FDNY spokesman said.

Seven families were displaced, three of which the Red Cross put up in hotels, a spokesman for the relief agency said.

The building where the fire started was so badly damaged that it partially collapsed, the spokesman said.

The Department of Buildings will investigate.

Flames also singed the outside of Church of the Crossroads Presbyterian Church at 244 Arlington Ave., damaging a stained glass window, officials said.

One person was seriously hurt but listed in stable condition, officials said.

Another civilian and seven firefighters were treated for minor injuries, officials said.

The patients were sent to Jamaica Hospital and New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, officials said.

More than 200 firefighters helped bring the blaze under control just minutes before midnight, an FDNY spokesman said.

Fire marshals will try to determine what sparked the blaze, officials said.

The Red Cross also gave money for food and clothing to the families affected and plan to revisit the fire scene Monday morning to meet with those who were affected, a spokesman said.

The church, which dates back to 1905, is home to an organ that was purchased with a $1,500 donation from Andrew Carnegie, according to Brownstoner.
