SUNSET PARK — The Sunset Park playground will undergo a complete year-long reconstruction that is scheduled to begin April 4, officials said this week.

The children's playground in the park near Sixth Avenue and 44th Street will be fitted with new play equipment, a safety surface, fencing, landscaping and benches, a spokeswoman for the Parks Department said.

While the playground will be closed during the construction period, physical activities for children will be organized through a program called "Kids in Motion," Martin Maher, chief of staff for Brooklyn parks said at a community board meeting Monday night.

The activities will likely take place on the synthetic turf fields in the park, he said.

The spray shower area in Sunset Park will also be open this summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Maher said at the meeting.

The project is funded for $3,220,000 with allocations from Mayor Bill de Blasio's office and the City Council.

An additional $1 million project for the neighborhood's green space is currently in its design phase, parks spokeswoman Crystal Howard said in an email.

This will include new benches as well as reconstruction of paths and fencing, she said. The work will primarily be focused along the Sixth Avenue promenade in the park.

That project has received funding from Borough President Eric Adams and the City Council.
