CRIME BLOTTER: Man Punches Smoker For Throwing Cigarette Pack in Trash

PARK SLOPE — A 44-year-old man was arrested after punching a smoker who tossed a cigarette pack into a trash can outside a Park Slope bar, according to a police report.

The smoker was puffing on a cigarette outside High Dive bar on Fifth Avenue and Carroll St. at 10:35 p.m. on Jan. 24 when the 44-year-old man approached the smoker "aggressively" about discarding his empty pack in a nearby trash can, according to the report.

The man said, "You can't throw that there," then punched the smoker in the face, leaving him with a bloody mouth, according to the report.

Other recent crimes in the 78th Precinct include the following, with details drawn from police reports:

► A 42-year-old man had his laptop computer stolen when he left it unattended during a 10-minute bathroom break at the Brooklyn Public Library main branch on Grand Army Plaza on Jan. 30 at 2:30 p.m.

► A thief smashed the passenger window on a Nissan parked outside the Prospect Park Zoo and stole an Albuterol asthma inhaler and a $100 bottle of Versace cologne Jan. 22 around noon.

► A man stole two e-cigarettes worth $60 each from the Brooklyn Smoke Shop on Flatbush and Fifth avenues on Jan. 30 at 10:10 p.m.

► $50 in cash was stolen from a counter at Sterling Grapes & Grains on Fifth Avenue and Sterling Place on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.

Overall, major crime in the 78th Precinct has dropped 30 percent this year compared to the same period in 2015, according to the most recent statistics from the NYPD. There were 73 major crimes reported between Jan. 1 and Jan. 31, 2015, compared with 51 during the same period in 2016.

Major crimes include murder, rape, robbery, burglary and grand larceny.
