Straphanger Stops Subway Mugging by Grabbing Suspect's Knife, NYPD Says

By Aidan Gardiner | February 1, 2016 8:42am

MANHATTAN — A straphanger managed to fend off a would-be mugger on the C train Sunday by grabbing his knife, police said.

The man was riding the downtown-bound train near St. Nicholas Avenue and West 155th Street about 9:15 p.m. when the suspect pulled out a knife and tried to grab the victim's phone, NYPD officials said.

He grabbed the knife, cutting his own hand, police said. He required stitches at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, police said.

The suspect, a man in his 20s, fled the train and hadn't been arrested as of Monday morning, police said.

He was last seen wearing a military-style jacket, an NYPD spokesman said.
