EAST WILLIAMSBURG — A woman grabbed a dog owner by the collar of her shirt shaking her from side to side, choked and shoved her, then snatched the victim's pooch, police and prosecutors said.

But the would-be dognapper didn't make it far.

There was a police officer at the scene who witnessed the assault in front of 424 Bushwick Ave. and managed to wrestle the Yorkshire Terrier free from the woman's clutches, according to police and prosecutors.

Rakesiah Lewis, 32, was arrested at the scene just before midnight on Jan. 20, police said. Prosecutors later charged her with robbery, criminal obstruction of breathing, larceny and assault among other offenses.

It wasn't clear if the 49-year-old victim, who had a sore and red neck following the attack, and Lewis knew each other before the incident.

Lewis, who did not respond immediately to a request for comment, went to court the day after the attack and was released without bail.

She's due back in court on March 24, records show.
