GRASMERE — The renovated Grasmere Staten Island Railway stop officially opened to the public on Tuesday morning after years of delays, the MTA said.

The agency rehabilitated the station — on Clove Road near Hillcrest Terrace — and added a new waiting area with heat and ventilation, restrooms, security cameras, a ramp to the new control house and a new staircase leading to the tracks, an MTA spokeswoman said.

The project, which broke ground in 2012 as part of a $17 million push to also repair eight other Staten Island Railway stations, was originally scheduled to open in 2013 but construction hit several snags along the way, including complications with the Con Edison feeder, the Staten Island Advance reported.

Other delays were blamed on factors including the particularly harsh winters of 2013 and 2014, the MTA said.

The project lost several months after the agency needed to change the design because the only staircase to the tracks needed to be replaced, not refurbished as first thought, the MTA said.
