BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A new five-story, 68-unit apartment building is planned for a Gates Avenue parking lot, according to permits filed.

The Postgraduate Center for Mental Health, which provides housing for individuals with mental illness, is proposing a residence at 500 Gates Ave. near Tompkins Avenue, records show.

The building will have 40,500 square feet of residential space with bike storage, a recreation area, offices, a laundry and meeting rooms, according to New York YIMBY, which first reported the application.

A representative for PGCMH could not be immediately reached for comment.

The organization came before Brooklyn’s Community Board 3 in October with a representative saying the units would be designated for the formerly homeless and low-income individuals, with a preference for veterans, according to meeting minutes.

The board recommended tabling the decision to give a letter of support to PGCMH until the organization returned with more information, the minutes showed.

PGCMH operates several supportive housing sites throughout the city and picked up the Gates Avenue property in 2012 for $1.75 million, according to city records.
