EAST HARLEM — Two men spent the first day of 2016 at Harlem Hospital after two separate assaults at the Wagner Houses on New Year's Eve.

Officers found a 40-year-old man laying face down of the sixth-floor stairwell of 2370 First Ave. about 5:30 a.m. Friday morning, according to the NYPD.

The man had a stab wound in the back, cuts on his face and two swollen eyes. The injuries were so gruesome that officers initially contacted homicide investigators, police said.

Paramedics transferred the victim to Harlem Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

The second assault happened in front of 350 E. 124th St. about 2 a.m. when three suspects attacked a 33-year-old man who attended a party down the block at 2405 First Ave., police said.

One of the men smashed a bottle on the victim's face. The other went through his pockets and stole $700 in cash.

The victim received six stitches at Harlem Hospital.

Investigators believe the assault may be gang related. Police continue to search for the attackers in both incidents.
