THE BRONX — The massive fire that ripped through a block of houses in Fordham last week was caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette, according to the FDNY.

The six-alarm blaze started just before midnight on Dec. 10 at 2086 Valentine Ave., a three-story home near East 180th Street, and spread to nine nearby buildings, leaving 10 people injured and 83 homeless, officials said.

It took nearly 200 firefighters almost three and one-half hours to get the inferno under control.

Officials are demolishing 2086 Valentine Ave. and adjacent buildings due to the extent of the damage, and the Red Cross and Department of Housing Preservation and Development are working on long-term placement plans for families who will need permanent housing assistance.
