Carroll Gardens Playground Could Reopen With Skate Park

By Nikhita Venugopal | November 20, 2015 2:57pm | Updated on November 22, 2015 8:01pm

CARROLL GARDENS —Closed during a long subway repair project, St. Mary's Playground could reopen with a basketball court, skate park and an outdoor fitness area, according to a new preliminary design from the Parks Department.

The playground, located on Smith Street between Nelson and Luquer streets, was shuttered in 2009 and demolished because of construction on the Smith-Ninth Street subway station during the MTA's rehabilitation of the Culver Viaduct.

After the subway station reopened in 2013, the community began calling on the city to restore St. Mary's playground for neighborhood kids.

Early designs presented this week for the playground also include an artificial turf lawn and a track. The reconstructed playground would also feature new landscaping, play equipment and spray showers, the Parks Department said.

The project has received roughly $1.5 million in funding, which includes $500,000 from Councilman Brad Lander and $350,000 from Borough President Eric Adams. The remaining funds were alloted by the mayor.

The Parks Department is also conducting a separate redesign project for St. Mary's Park on Smith Street between Huntington and Nelston streets, adjacent to the playground.

Final designs for the playground will be completed in June 2016. Construction is expected to begin the following spring, the Parks Department said.
