Apartments Planned to Replace Former Willoughby Avenue Church

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A new residential building is set to replace a former Baptist church on Willoughby Avenue, according to city records.

Construction is already underway at 599 Willoughby Ave., the previous home of Hebron Baptist Church.

Conversion of the existing building near Tompkins Avenue will create 16 apartments, with plans for bike parking and a penthouse, according to permits and New York YIMBY, which first reported the filing.

Hebron Baptist Church moved from the location in June 2014 because it required “a lot of work” and was unable to meet the tenants’ needs, said Rev. Timothy Taylor.

The house of worship, which had held the deed to the Willoughby Avenue building since 1984, has since relocated to Fountain Avenue in Cypress Hills.

599-601 Willoughby LLC bought the property from the church for $1.9 million in the summer of 2014, city records show.

The planned three-story residence would keep the building’s ground-level exterior in tact, according to renderings at the site, and the structure would expand from 8,923 square feet to 11,994 square feet.

The project is designed by architect Charles Mallea and slated for completion in the fall of 2017.
