DONGAN HILLS — A driver involved in a crash that killed a 32-year-old man Monday had 14 bags of crack inside his car, police said.

Angel Ortiz, 25, was driving his 2014 Volkswagen Jetta southbound on Hylan Boulevard at about 11:15 a.m. when he crashed into a 2001 Hyundai Elantra whose driver tried to make a left turn onto Old Town Road, police said.

The crash caused Ortiz's car to swerve and crash into a utility pole, police said.

A passenger in Ortiz's car, Vincent Sugrue, 32, of Mariners Harbor, was found unconscious with head trauma and taken to Staten Island University Hospital North, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Ortiz was taken to the same hospital in critical condition with head and body trauma, police said. An 18-year-old female who was in the back seat was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in stable condition with back and neck pain, the NYPD said.

The 88-year-old female driver of the Elantra was taken to the hospital in stable condition, police said.

While investigating the crash, police found that Ortiz had his license revoked and had 14 bags of crack cocaine inside the car, the NYPD said.

Ortiz was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.
