CRIME BLOTTER: Thieves Strike Food Truck and Let $500 of Food Spoil

GOWANUS — Thieves stole cash from a food truck, but hurt the business even more when they switched off the truck's power, according to a police report.

The thieves broke into the Cachapas y Mas food truck when it was parked on Nevins and Union streets in Gowanus on Oct. 25 about 9 a.m. They took $200 in cash, then switched off the truck's power source, which spoiled $500 of ingredients, according to the report.

An employee told police she thought the thieves were former employees of the mobile food vendor, the report stated.

Other notable recent crimes in the 78th Precinct include the following, with details drawn from police reports:

► Two thieves on bikes rode by and snatched an iPhone 5S out of the hand of a 40-year-old man who was waiting for the bus on Garfield Place and Seventh Avenue at 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 29.

► A burglar crept into Amorina Pizza while it was closed for the night Oct. 29 at 11:30 p.m. and swiped a bank card an an undisclosed amount of cash. The thief entered the restaurant, on Vanderbilt Avenue and Prospect Place, through an empty air conditioning duct.

► A burglar stole an $1,800 Apple MacBook Pro and charger from an apartment on Butler Street near Fourth Avenue on Oct. 29.

► A burglar broke into the offices of the nonprofit Rooftop Films in the Old American Can Factory on Third Street and Third Avenue and stole more than $15,700 in gear, including still and video cameras and camera lenses. The theft happened at 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, when the business was closed for the night.

► A thief swiped a laptop belonging to Fatty Daddy Taco on Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue on Oct. 21 at 9 p.m. The computer was stolen after an employee left it in a bag hanging off the back of a chair in the Mexican eatery.

► A thief in a black baseball hat swiped $1,209.74 in Rogaine from the Duane Reade on Flatbush and Seventh avenues on Oct. 29 at 8:40 p.m.

Overall in the 78th Precinct, major crimes have increased 3.49 percent this year compared to the same period in 2014, according to the most recent statistics from the NYPD.
