WEST VILLAGE — An impassioned group of transgender activists and allies made their voices heard through the Village, along Broadway and all the way downtown Monday night, in the hopes of raising awareness of the violence they face daily, they said.

Roughly 20 people gathered at Christopher Park across from the Stonewall Inn, motivated by the murders of 22 transgender women nationwide this year to date. Activists said the number of trans women killed is undoubtedly higher, given how frequently crimes against the transgender community go unreported and how often transgender victims are misidentified by police and other authorities.

They wanted to draw particular attention to how many of the 22 murdered women — at least 16 of whom, they said, were African-American or Caribbean. All but one were women of color, they said.

"That intersection — being trans and black — is lethal around the world," said Brooke Cerda, 50, of Inwood.

"People are still wondering, 'Are they hate crimes or not hate crimes?'" she continued. "It doesn't really matter. We're still getting killed and there are no consequences. Less than one percent of cases get prosecuted."

State Senator Brad Hoylman, who stopped by the rally in Christopher Park before the march, issued a statement Tuesday morning commending the organizers of the event, Everything Transgender NYC, and vowed to fight for their cause "as a member of the LGBT community and as a state lawmaker."

"The murder of a single person on the basis of gender identity is an unacceptable tragedy; the murder of 22 people is an epidemic," Hoylman said.
