ELMHURST — The area's long-shuttered Long Island Rail Road stop got the greenlight to reopen under the newly-approved MTA budget, officials said.

The station, which closed in 1985 due to low ridership, is set to reopen in 2019 with new elevators, updated ticket machines, better platforms and more.

MTA officials estimate it'll cost $31 million to reopen the station, along Broadway between Cornish and Whitney avenues. It will serve trains on the Port Washington branch.

The city and state agreed to a budget deal for the MTA in October, with the state committing $8.3 billion and the city pledging $2.5 billion to help close the gap on the MTA's $26.1 billion improvement plan.

The Elmhurst station is one of two new LIRR stops opening under the plan. Another is planned for Suffolk County.
