UPPER EAST SIDE — A 16-year-old student of Loyola School died of a chest injury during a soccer game on Monday.

Thomas Jakelich, a student of a private Jesuit high school at 980 Park Ave., was playing soccer at Randall's Island Park on Monday at roughly 4 p.m., when he got a serious chest injury, according to FDNY.

He was transported to Harlem Hospital Center for treatment.

Loyola's boys varsity soccer team was playing against the United Nations International School in a semifinal game that day, according to UNIS' website

The city's office of the Chief Medical Examiner said its investigation of the death is still pending and could not provide a cause.

The school declined to comment, but provided a statement to other news outlets.

“As a school community, we mourn the tragic loss of our student and offer our prayers and deepest condolences to his family," the school said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal. "Out of respect for the privacy of Thomas’ loved ones and that of our students, we offer no other comment beyond our profound sadness at the loss of a beloved member of the Loyola School family."

Students leaving Loyola High School on Wednesday were instructed not to discuss the matter.
