International Hip Hop Convention Comes to The Apollo Theater

HARLEM — B-boys are taking over 125th Street this weekend.

The Apollo Theater is hosting an international “Breakin’ Convention,” celebrating hip hop dance theater that featuring performers from around the globe including the popular hip hop dance duo, "Les Twins."

Free events include break dancing performances under the Apollo’s marquee from dance crews like the Bwreckfast Club, the Floatmasters, and the Dynamic Rockers.

“These are some truly gifted performers, and not only will our audiences get to see some pretty amazing and astounding performances, but they’ll be able to get into the spirit of the whole festival by participating in the workshops and getting their dance moves on,” said Mikki Shepard, the Apollo’s executive director.

The Breakin’ Convention is a London-based international dance theater festival that has been around for more than a decade. They hosted their 10th anniversary in Harlem back in 2013.

Events this weekend include dance performances, film screenings, and hip hop dance workshops for children and adults. Some of the events are free while tickets to other performances cost between $17 and $40.

Here is a breakdown of some of this weekends’ events:

►Free performances under the Apollo marquee featuring live DJ’s, break dancers and graffiti artists.

Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

►Hip Hop Dance Lessons

Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

►Hip-hop dance performances featuring international artists

Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

►Screening of “Flex is King” a film about young Brooklyn based dancers competing in “Battlefest.”

Saturday at 3 p.m.

►Hip-hop dance demo and graffiti art workshop for children.

Sunday at 1 p.m.
