EAST ELMHURST — A long-overlooked park is set for an upgrade, including the neighborhood's first dog run.

Overlook Park, along Ditmars Boulevard, is set for a $3.2 million renovation with funds from elected officials and the Parks Department.

The $1.7 million in renovations includes upgrades to the playground, benches and sidewalks, as well as new greenery and trees.

A new dog run will also be built with $1.5 million in funds.

A place for East Elmhurst's four-legged constituents had been a popular item during participatory budgeting, according to Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland. But it lost out to funding priorities that focused instead on smartboards in local schools and upgraded lighting on Roosevelt Avenue.

"As a community of many dog lovers, we are also thrilled to have a proper place for our four-legged friends to roam freely and live more active lifestyles," she said.

Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver said the park is "a green oasis in one of our city's most highly-trafficked areas."

It's not clear when the renovations will begin.
