MIDTOWN —A Ganesvoort Park Avenue hotel staffer was arrested for stealing money from a guest's safe, according to the NYPD.

A security guard at the 420 Park Ave. S. hotel called police after a guest reported 228 euros missing from his hotel safe at roughly 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, police said.

When the guest tried to reclaim the cash, all that was left in the safe was a torn envelope, according to authorities.

After reviewing surveillance footage, the security guard noticed a 33-year-old employee make four separate trips to the lockbox, remove items from it and stuff them into his pockets, according to a police report.

When confronted, the thief told his boss he had been “desperate” to pay rent and that he had watched over another employee’s shoulder to learn the code to the safe, police said.

He also told his boss that he had cashed in the euros for about $260, according to police.

The hotel declined to comment.
