LOWER EAST SIDE — Nearly all fourth graders passed at one of the city’s most sought-after public schools this year, making it one of the top performing elementary schools citywide yet again, according to the results of this year’s tests.

More than 98 percent of students from New Explorations Into Science, Technology and Math (NEST+m) on Columbia Street, passed the English language arts exam, making it the school with the second-highest passing rate for ELA.

Students’ performance this year was an improvement over last year’s test, when nearly 95 percent of the school's fourth graders passed the ELA exam, ranking it third citywide.

NEST+m students also did well on this year's state math tests, with 99.1 percent of them passing the exam, according to test results. The school’s passing rate ranked fourth in math in the city overall.

The school is one of five citywide in which all students are enrolled in the gifted and talented program. It is consistently ranked as one of the top in the city based on its standardized test scores, according to its website, and is the only K through 12 school in Manhattan.

NEST+m recently underwent a leadership change when principal Olga Livanis — who had been criticized by parents and faculty in the past — stepped down after nine years in the position. Mark Berkowitz is currently the interim acting principal, according to the school's website.

Test results in other East Village and Lower East Side schools varied widely.

Some schools did relatively well, like the Earth School on East Sixth Street, which ranked 16th citywide in ELA with a passing rate of 78.9 percent, and the Shuang Wen School on Cherry Street, which ranked 29th in the city for math with a passing rate of 83.8 percent.

But in other schools, the pass rates dipped into the single digits. At P.S. 137 John Bernstein, only 5.7 percent of students passed the math exam, and at P.S. 15 Roberto Clemente, 0 percent of its students passed the ELA test, results show.
