Brooklyn Man Among Missing Crew of Sunken Ship, Coast Guard Says

BROOKLYN - A man from Brooklyn is among the missing crew members of the cargo ship El Faro, which is thought to have sunk off the coast of the Bahamas during Hurricane Joaquin last Thursday, according to the United States Coast Guard.

On Wednesday evening, the USCG announced it would suspend its the search for the missing crew. It also released a list of the 33 people believed to have been on board the ship.

One of the crew members identified was Mitchell Kuflik. The 26-year-old Kuflik was a resident of Prospect Heights, according to public records.

Kuflik was one of five members of the El Faro's crew who had graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine.

On Thursday, Dr. William J. Brennan, the president of Maine Maritime Academy, released a statement honoring his institution's missing alumni.

"I regret to share with the Maine Maritime Academy family that another friend, colleague, and alumnus, Mitchell Kuflik, Class of 2011, was a member of the El Faro crew. The extended Academy community is grieving the loss of another mariner and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones," Dr. Brennan wrote.

The 790-foot cargo ship was en route to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Jacksonville, Florida, when the USCG received reports that the ship had lost propulsion at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The USCG, Navy, Air Force, Air National Guard and tugboat crews searched more than 183,000 square nautical miles off the Bahamian coast to try to find the crew, according to the USCG.

One person was found dead during the search, although the person's identity was not released by the USCG.
