EAST VILLAGE — A Venezuelan eatery is opening in part of the former Café Pick Me Up, which closed earlier this year after two decades in business.

Arepa Factory, located at 147 Avenue A, aims to open sometime this week, serving Venezuelan food with a “New York-style” twist, a restaurant employee said Monday afternoon. The restaurant owner’s information was not immediately available.

The restaurant’s bright yellow awning and signage went up last week, according to EV Grieve, which first wrote about the storefront’s new tenant.

The location was originally part of Café Pick Me Up, which also took up the storefront next door on the corner of Avenue A and East 9th Street.

The café closed after 20 years in business last May after a rent hike, its owners said. At the time, it still held the lease for the small, narrow, section located at 147 Avenue A.

Café Pick Me Up’s operations moved to Gnocco, another one of the owners’ restaurants, located on East 10th Street near Avenue B.
