LOWER EAST SIDE — A woman stole a 42-year-old man’s Jack Spade briefcase and the Apple MacBook laptop inside it after he put the bag down on the sidewalk to hail a cab, police said.

The man got in the cab in front of Russ and Daughters Café, at 127 Orchard St., at roughly 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 23, and was heading home when he realized the bag was missing, police said.

Niki Russ Federman, who co-owns the café, said the man was carrying other bags along with the briefcase when he left the eatery at about 6:15 p.m.

Federman said the man put down the bags and leaned them against a tree enclosure outside of the restaurant, but left behind the briefcase when he entered the cab.

The unattended bag caught the attention of a woman, who walked past the bag once before returning to take the briefcase, according to security footage, Federman said.

Restaurant workers looked at the video after the man called in search of his briefcase, Federman said.

"We looked at the video footage and then shared it with him so that he could file a report," she said.

Police said the thief was wearing her long brown hair in a bun.
