HELLS KITCHEN — For the first time in 30 years, you'll be able to catch the rare combination of a lunar eclipse and a supermoon this Sunday night.

For about two and half hours beginning at 9:00 p.m., the moon will move into the Earth's shadow. It will also appear bigger and brighter in the sky, because it is at its closest point to the earth, according to NASA.

Moon-gazers will gather in special locations across the city to inspect the stellar phenomenon, and the Intrepid and the High Line will open their gates late and have binoculars and telescopes on hand to get an even better look.

The High Line will open from 9:00 to 11:30 near 14th Street for the event that's run in collaboration with the Amateur Astronomers Association. There will also be a cash bar and acoustic music from the duo F Tones

The Intrepid will open Pier 86 from 9:00 to 1:00 a.m. for free to the first 600 people who show up.

The Amateur Astronomers Association has a list of other locations across the city that will be hosting viewing parties.
