HARLEM — City health inspectors shut down a Kennedy Fried Chicken and a Caribbean bistro Monday.

Both uptown eateries had a slew of violations ranging from signs of flies and mice inside, possible cross-contamination, and not having a hand washing station, according to the Department of Health.

The Kennedy Fried Chicken at 2057 Seventh Ave. remained closed Wednesday morning. A cardboard sign in front of the rolled down metal gate said, “Closed for renovation. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Inspectors found flies present in the restaurant and noticed food was, “adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded [properly],” according to the Department of Health.

During their previous inspection on Sept. 1, inspectors said the restaurant was not vermin proof and the plumbing was not properly maintained, records show.

An employee at the store said he did not know when the restaurant will reopen and declined to talk about the closure.

The second restaurant shut down by the Health Department Monday was East Harlem’s Zahilaya’s Bistro on 2028 Third Ave.

Inspectors there found evidence of mice and live roaches inside the restaurant. They also noticed that the hand-washing station did not have any soap or hand-drying devices and the facility was not vermin proof, according to the Health Department.

It’s unclear if the restaurant was open Wednesday. The bistro’s phone number was disconnected Wednesday morning.
