GREAT KILLS — A cyclist died and another was in critical condition after they were hit by a boat that detached from an SUV that was towing it, police said Tuesday.

Alexa Cioffi, 21, of Eltingville, was riding her bicycle in the right lane of Hylan Boulevard on Staten Island, with a 22-year-old woman at 5:18 p.m. Monday when the driver of a 2015 Toyota SUV, with a boat in tow, overtook them near Redgrave Avenue, police said.

As the driver changed lanes, the trailer carrying the boat detached from the SUV and hit the 22-year-old, police said.

The boat then struck Cioffi and eventually pinned her underneath when it stopped, police said.

The victims were taken to Staten Island University Hospital North, where Cioffi was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and no arrests have been made, police said.
