Monday, September 14

Grand Opening of the Sheen Center for Thought & Culture

Where: 18 Bleecker St. in NoHo
When: Three-week festival, Sept. 14 through Oct. 4

The brand-new Fulton J. Sheen Center, operated by the Archdiocese of New York, is celebrating their opening with three weeks of theater, music and dance performances, film screenings, poetry readings, art shows, talks and lectures in their 274-seat theater space and their 80-seat black box theater. The building also holds an art gallery and four rehearsal studios. The first 100 tickets to each event are $10, seven events are free, and three events, including a talk on the pope’s visit to the U.S., will be live-streamed on their website at SheenCenter.org.

Tuesday, September 15

Tomato Fest

Where: Alobar, 46-42 Vernon Blvd., Long Island City
When: Sept. 15-20

Long Island City eatery Alobar will celebrate all things tomato with a special tasting menu showcasing one of summer’s favorite in-season ingredients. The three-course meal costs $45 a person, with $10 going to anti-hunger organization No Kid Hungry.

Art & Minds Workshop for Adults

Where: Studio Museum at 144 W. 125th St. in Harlem
When: 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This workshop is designed for adults with memory disorders and their caregivers. Participants will get a guided tour of exhibits and an art-making workshop. The events is free but registration is required.

Wetlands Tour

Where: Randall’s Island
When: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A free guided tour of the restored wetlands surrounding Randall’s Island. The tour includes great views of natural wildlife and wildflowers. Participants will also learn about the history of the island.

Chef Dale Talde Cookbook Launch at Pork Slope

Where: Pork Slope, 247 Fifth Ave., Park Slope
When: 7 p.m.

Tickets are $55 and include food, drinks, and a signed copy of chef Dale Talde’s cookbook, “Asian-American.” Talde is known for his appearances on TV’s “Top Chef” and is behind the Park Slope restaurants Talde, Pork Slope and Thistle Hill Tavern. This event is hosted by Community Bookstore.

"Roosevelt Island - From Madmen and Criminals to Innovation Hotspot"

Discover Roosevelt Island’s stories and views with this tour with teacher and walking guide author Joyce Gold. Tickets are $35.

When: Noon

Chilean author Alejandro Zambra will speak about his newest work “My Documents.” This young author is known for his writings that explore coming of age in Chile after the fall of Dictator Pinochet. His earlier novels include “Ways of Going Home,” “The Private Lives of Trees” and “Bonsai.”

Author Barry Yourgrau at Astoria Bookshop

Where: Astoria Bookshop, 31-29 31st St., Astoria
When: 7 p.m.

Author Barry Yourgrau will read from his new memoir, “Mess: One Man’s Struggle to Clean Up His House and His Act,” about his experiences as a chronic clutterer.

Reading of Greenpoint’s Forgotten Past

Where: Eagle Trading Co., 258 Franklin St., Greenpoint
When: 7:15 p.m.

Local author and historian Geoffrey Cobb does a reading of his book, “Greenpoint Brooklyn’s Forgotten Past.” It’s full of details about people from the neighborhood’s past who made an impact that spread beyond the borough.

How Brooklyn Works: Trash Pick-Up

Where: Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont St., Brooklyn Heights
When: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Ever wondered how the city’s Department of Sanitation operates? Now’s your chance to learn about the city agency from TED Talk presenter and the department’s “anthropologist-in-residence” Robin Nagle, who is also the author of “Picking Up.” Tickets are priced at $10.

Yarn Bomb Knitting Session to Beautify Fourth Avenue

Where: Textile Arts Center, 505 Carroll St., Gowanus
When: 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Volunteer knitters will create colorful 8-inch crocheted squares that will become fabric art on Fourth Avenue. The “community yarn bombing” is being organized by the Park Slope Civic Council’s Forth on Fourth Committee, which aims to beautify the busy thoroughfare.
