It's safe to say that the New York Post isn't Bill de Blasio's biggest fan. (Just read this op-ed characterizing the city as a mess that's bound to get worse before his term is over.)
Tuesday night de Blasio hit back, tweeting a mock cover of the tabloid with the headline "Safest Summer in 20 Years But We Still Hate De Blasio."

Twitter responded.
@BilldeBlasio you are a petty, infantile, fool of a man and I will not be voting for you again. Please just go away now.

I want to like @BilldeBlasio but this is pretty lame. Get a thicker skin, dude. pic.twitter.com/nAMy3HvZ4y

@BilldeBlasio you're so funny and clever and good at social media. It must have taken an intern 15 whole minutes to photoshop that.

@BilldeBlasio @nypost Did one of your staffers create this during work hours with MY tax dollars? For a big guy you have a small spine.

@billdeblasio The Post is simply echoing the sentiments of many NYers. We're frustrated. What happened to the Town Hall you promised?

But it wasn't all bad.
@BilldeBlasio @nypost Let the haters hate...it shows you're doing great. :-)

At a press conference in the Bronx Wednesday, the mayor declined to answer a question about whose idea it was to post the mock-up Post cover.
"We're not going to address that right now," de Blasio said, emphasizing that he would take only on-topic questions about new legislation protecting tenants from harrassment and an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease at the Melrose Houses.
