CHINATOWN — Local police are inviting the community to “run your precinct... Literally!"

The 5th Precinct will host its first-ever guided running tour on Sept. 9 at 6 p.m., in which officers and the public will jog the length of a 10K around the precinct, according to its Twitter account. Officers will take turns highlighting points of interest and historic locations.

“It’s not a race or anything like that,” said Det. Vincent Cheung, who handles community affairs for the precinct which covers Chinatown, Little Italy, Nolita and parts of SoHo. “We’re just jogging around the precinct, just touring, that’s all.”

The event, he said, was part of the precinct’s public outreach efforts and inspired by a pedal-powered tour two weeks ago, in which bicyclists and police officers discussed safety and enforcement issues in the area.

“They did a bike ride…taking a look at the concerns some of the bicyclists had and we were thinking maybe we could take a run and if anything comes up make note of it,” said Cheung.

The jogging tour kicks off at Canal and Forsyth streets. Runners are encouraged to bring their own water and bag check will be available, according to the precinct.
