BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A new restaurant on Bedford Avenue serving creative spins on classic American fare is looking to offer healthy and affordable dishes to the neighborhood, its owners said.

Fancy Nancy debuted with a soft opening last week at 1038 Bedford near Lafayette Avenue.

Friends Kristin Walker, Jay Chan and Ben Snider sought to create a casual “neighborhood spot” with an eclectic menu of items, all priced under $20.

“You can come in with your friends, you can bring your parents,” Walker said.

“We wanted to open a place where we felt we would want to hang out and eat, nothing too uptight, where people could relax.”

The eatery, which takes its name after Chan’s mother, is a burst of colorful seating, dishes and decorations, with old recycled chairs from a Massachusetts school.

A wooden mural constructed out of nearly 400 individually cut and stained pieces serves as the bar’s backdrop.

“It sort of represents the dynamic in this neighborhood, which is that we’re all pretty much cut from the same piece, but different shapes and sizes,” Walker said.

Fancy Nancy’s menu features choices like habanero honey duck wings with garlic, ginger and cilantro, tater tots and a string bean salad with house-made ricotta, mushrooms and crispy onions.

Currently, the priciest item is an $11 cheeseburger topped with a deviled egg.

Keeping the selections budget-friendly was a priority for the owners, Chan said, and the menu is set to change seasonally.

“We’re really into taking care of people and we want them to have a good time,” he added. “We’re running this place like a family and we want the community to be included in that.”

The restaurant also serves up a variety of cocktails, beers and natural wines, and owners are planning to offer brunch on the weekends.

Fancy Nancy is open on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 5:30 to 11 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 p.m. to midnight.
