Police Guard NYC News Stations After Gunman Kills Journalists in Va.: NYPD

By Aidan Gardiner | August 26, 2015 11:29am

NEW YORK CITY — The NYPD deployed officers to guard city television news stations Wednesday morning after a gunman killed a reporter and a cameraman during a live interview in Virginia, officials said.

The shooter, whom Virginia's governor said may be a "disgruntled employee," fatally shot reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Alan Ward, 27, as they interviewed a local official about a recreational plaza on location about 6:45 a.m.

In dramatic video, that was broadcast live, Parker screams as shots crack out of the frame. The camera then drops to the ground and shows the gunman walking past.

The suspect was not immediately arrested.

"Out of an abundance of caution," the NYPD sent officers from their Counterterrorism Bureau, Critical Response Vehicles and Hercules Teams to television stations around New York City.

"While there is no indication of any threat to media outlets beyond this incident, we have provided an additional layer of security until we have a fuller understanding of the motive behind the Virginia incident," NYPD officials said.

An NYPD spokesman said he did not know how many stations would get additional police protection.

Police would not be accompanying reporters in the field, the spokesman said.
