If emoji is actually on its way to becoming a language, then New York City should have its own emoji dialect — at least according to the Village Voice.

Did another self-important hipster kill your buzz? Let your friends know with a handlebar moustache emoji. Baffled by the way a wealthy man berated a deli clerk this morning? Try the Donald Trump emoji on for size.

Sadly, both scenarios happen relatively frequently in New York City. Thankfully, their accompanying icons are just two emoji options that Village Voice staff offered in its vision of a New York City emoji keyboard, which it unveiled on August 18th.

Illustrator Joe Rocco drew up 30 New York City-specific emoji for the Voice staff, which range from the superbly irreverent (like the "Cash Only" sign, for when you're dining out in Brooklyn) to the sadly relevant (tapping the "Regular Slice" pizza emoji to indicate your budget or sense of self-worth).

It's uncertain if the Voice's suggestions will ever become a reality (though they welcome the help of NYC-based developers in the realization of their hyper-specific emoji dreams), but the emoji the Voice has envisioned undoubtedly highlight some of the things that make New York great — and great to hate.
