HARLEM — 75 percent of Harlem students between third and eighth grade failed the state’s English and math exams this year, according to data released by the Department of Education.

Citywide, 35 percent of students passed the math test and 30 percent passed the English portion. Both numbers are up from last year’s 34 percent in math and 28 percent in English, data shows.

The state exams were more difficult than those of previous years, according to the Department of Education.

“Also, these tests are new, which means they do not measure progress. A lower score simply means that there are areas to focus on and improve,” the DOE said in a statement.

Despite the overall test scores in the neighborhood, there were some outliers among Harlem schools.

At Columbia Secondary School in West Harlem, 82 percent of students passed the English exam and 89 passed math. In East Harlem’s Tag Young Scholars, 85 percent of students passed English and 94 percent passed math, data shows.

Charter schools on average outperformed the city’s schools in the English exams with 44 percent of their students passing, but fared worst than city schools in the math exam with 28 percent of students passing, according to DOE data.
