Hong Kong Dragon Boat Contest and Festival

Where: Meadow Lake, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Flushing

The annual Dragon Boat festival runs all weekend with races, live music and other performances to honor the ancient tradition.

► JAMS Festival in downtown Jamaica

Where: Rufus King Park (Jamaica Avenue and 153rd Street) on Friday and Jamaica Avenue (between Parsons Boulevard and 170th Street) on Saturday

The annual Jamaica Arts and Music Summer Festival kicks off on Friday at 5 p.m. with JAMS Under the Stars, a free five hour concert held at Rufus King Park. Gospel singer Liz Black and Native American artist Toni Ann Semple will perform. On Saturday, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., the festival will take over Jamaica Avenue, featuring more than 500 vendors, a classic car show and a section for children with a rock-climbing wall, face painting and bounce houses.

"How Cats Took Over the Internet” Exhibit

Where: Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35 Ave., Astoria

Check out the opening weekend of this exhibit, which explores the phenomenon of internet cats. Watch popular cat videos and GIFs and make your own meme. The museum is open Fridays from 10:30 a.m to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $12. The exhibit will be on display until January.

Friday, July 7

“E.T.” Screening at Hunters Point South Park

Where: Hunters Point South Park, Center Boulevard and 51st Avenue, Long Island City

Catch a free outdoor viewing of this Steven Spielberg classic, part of Cinema LIC, a series of movie screenings on the Long Island City waterfront. Showtime is at sunset, around 8:30 to 8:45 p.m.

Saturday, August 8

The Moment: Taiwanese American Contemporary Arts

Where: NYSCI, 47-01 111th Street, Corona        

This program explores the idea of virtual art and real art. The artists taking part in the exhibition have created works with 2-D and technological elements, allowing visitors to touch what’s on display. The exhibit opens Aug. 8 with a special session (RSVP required) and runs through Sept. 13. It’s included with the museum’s admission, which is $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors. Exhibition runs through September.

Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Concert

Where: 46th Street and Queens Boulevard, Sunnyside

The Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District presents its annual jazz festival, which pays homage to Bix Beiderbecke, a musician and composer who once lived in the neighborhood. The free event will run from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will feature Bix Beiderbecke trivia, giveaways and live music. 

► David Ezra Stein reads his new book “Tad and Dad”

Where: Barnes & Noble, 70-00 Austin Street, Forest Hills

Kew Gardens writer David Ezra Stein will be reading his new book,“Tad and Dad,” at the Forest Hills Barnes & Noble. Kids will also make tadpole puppets. The free event starts at 3 p.m. 

Sunday, August 9

Canine Ice Cream Festival

Where: Rockaway Freeway Dog Park, Rockaway Freeway and Beach 83rd Street, Rockaway Beach

Free ice cream for your pooch! The Parks Department will hand out doggie-friendly ice cream in addition to music and games at the bark park. Other giveaways for the first 25 dogs (and their human owners). The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Queens Symphony Orchestra Performs in Forest Park

Where: Forest Park, Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive, Woodhaven

Enjoy an evening of classic music by the Queens Symphony Orchestra in Forest Park. The free summer concert, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., will take place at George Seuffert Bandshell.
