BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — New rum and reggae bar Lovers Rock opened at 419 Tompkins Ave. in late July, serving up daiquiris, agave drinks and an eclectic mix of Caribbean-inspired tunes.

Owners Alex Escamilla and Shane Feirstein said they decided to bring the business to the neighborhood to share their love for music.

“I think the idea was to let this be a platform for our weirdness,” Escamilla added.

Pink walls with bamboo shoots feature framed selections from the owners’ personal art collections, including neon leopards and album covers from reggae artists like Jah Kingdom.

The bar is focused on rum, tequila and mezcal, as well as fresh flavors, Feirstein said.

Customers can pick from drink choices that include a Jamaican rum punch, piña colada and hibiscus cooler, or chow down on beef and veggie patties in the backyard area.

The space takes its name from the romantic reggae genre, along with the title of a Clash song and Sade album.

“'Lovers Rock' was perfect for all its connotations,” Escamilla said. “At its core it’s a reggae reference, but it also feels like a place and mixes everything we’re fans of.”

Local DJs will spin weekly, the owners added.

Lovers Rock is open Monday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. For more information, visit their website here.
