WEST VILLAGE — A man climbed the fire escape of a residential building on Jane Street and broke into a third-floor apartment, police said.

Police said the burglary took place on July 24 at 3:55 a.m.

The 18-year-old made it into the apartment, police said, but accidentally knocked over a glass vase next to the window and woke up the sleeping tenant, a 27-year-old man.

Police said the teen tried to scale the fire escape to get into apartments higher up, but when the 27-year-old man spotted him and confronted him, he booked it down the fire escape and fled.

He was picked up by 6th Precinct officers canvassing the neighborhood after the woken tenant called 911, police said.

The teen was charged with felony burglary and is being held on $10,000 bail, according to court records. He is due back in court on July 29. His attorney did not immediately respond to a message left for comment.
