MANHATTAN — A trio of would-be thieves drilled through a basement ceiling Saturday to get into a Gramercy Citibank, then spent 90 minutes trying to pry open ATMs before fleeing empty-handed, police said.

The men first entered the basement of 102 25th St. and drilled their way through the ceiling to break into an adjacent Citibank at 333 Park Ave. South about 2:36 a.m., an NYPD spokesman said.

The bank is just a row of ATMs without any human tellers.

They used a saw to try and force open the ATMs, but gave up about 4 a.m. and left, the NYPD spokesman said.

On Monday, three security guards started working eight-hour shifts around the clock, one of them said.

"They sent us here. They told us there was a robbery," the guard said.
