EAST HARLEM — More than $8,000 is missing from the bank account of a nonprofit that turns vacant buildings into affordable housing.

Youth Action YouthBuild, an East Harlem-based nonprofit that inspired dozens of similar programs around the country, noticed the missing money June 22, according to the NYPD.

Between June 12 and 15, someone cashed six checks ranging from $926 to $1,495 from an account under the organization's name, police said.

Youth Action YouthBuild started in the late 1970s and quickly became a model for youth programs around the country. There are YouthBuild programs in 45 states. They have built more than 20,000 units of affordable housing since 1994, according to their website.

The nonprofit declined to comment on the stolen money.
