Where In The World Is Mayor Bill De Blasio? On a Family Vacation

By Jeff Mays | June 29, 2015 6:32pm

CITY HALL—Mayor Bill de Blasio is taking a family vacation to the Southwest and out West starting Tuesday night.

The mayor's office said de Blasio would take an eight-day break with his wife First Lady Chirlane McCray and son and daughter, Dante and Chiara.

Timed to coincide with the Fourth of July holiday, the vacation will stretch from Tuesday, June 30 to Wednesday, July 8.

Unlike de Blasio's last family vacation, an eight day trip to Italy where he mixed business and pleasure, meeting with various mayors and visiting his family's hometown, there will be no public events on this trip.

The mayor will pay for his family's travels, but will also take an undisclosed number of his security detail at a cost to taxpayers, de Blasio administration officials said.

De Blasio has taken criticism for the amount of travel he has done since taking office 18 months ago. The mayor has traveled abroad to Manchester, England, and to the Midwest and California promoting his progressive agenda on such issues as income inequality.

There was also a quick trip to Paris following terrorists attacks there. In April, de Blasio and his wife took a vacation to Puerto Rico.

The mayor will stay in touch with senior administrative officials via daily call-ins. First Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris will handle the city's day to day operations, the mayor's office said.
