FLUSHING— Rig a boat and tie some knots with sailing classes this summer at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

The American Small Craft Association starts its beginners sailing classes on Saturday, June 20 with a lecture at the World's Fair Boathouse.

The course costs $300 and covers six classes on Meadow Lake, which begin June 27, as well as classroom instruction and a mandatory swim test.

A make-up lecture will be held Wednesday, June 24, and other classroom lessons will be held in July.

The 94-acre lake is the city's largest and was built for the 1939 World's Fair.

By the end of the class, new sailors will be able to use the wind as their engine and sail around Meadow Lake.

TASCA began teaching sailing and boating at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in 1967, and has taught more than 3,000 people to sail.

Last fall, the Parks Department announced a project to clean up the man-made lake, and will surround the southern edge with native plants to help protect it from runoff from the Grand Central Parkway.
