Cycling in New York has been on the rise over the past decade, with advocate group Transportation Alternative reporting that more than 200,000 people ride bikes in the city every day.

But the minute these cyclists’ feet hit the bike pedals, they’re subject to an array of rules — some of which can be quite surprising — and expensive if broken.
