BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Art aficionados can stroll through Bed-Stuy’s local art scene in a series of monthly gallery walks.

Cultural centers, galleries and local businesses will open their doors on the first Saturday of every month through October to showcase the neighborhood’s creativity and talent.

Eight venues from Nostrand to Lewis avenues will partner with Councilman Robert Cornegy’s office this weekend for the free event.

“My major goal is to turn Bedford-Stuyvesant into an artist colony,” said organizer Joseph C. Grant Jr.

“Rather than doing these one-off yearly events, we want to do something consistent to show the life force of these artists who are part of the community.”

Participants can stop by Zion Gallery, located in a Macdonough Street brownstone, visit the “Elements” exhibition at Welancora Gallery, or see the urban contemporary art on display at House of Art Gallery on Marcus Garvey Boulevard.

“It just goes to show the rich history that Bed-Stuy has, but we also have a lot to offer when it comes to culture,” said House of Art director Richard Beavers.

“By coming together, we’ll make this place more of an interest and a reason to come visit. It’ll be a destination.”

The Bed-Stuy Art Walk also aims to highlight the neighborhood’s nightlife to draw new people to the area, Grant added.

In addition to the galleries, people can visit Vodou Bar on Saturday night to grab a drink and watch a collection of short films.

Art lovers are advised to begin the self-guided tour at Fulton Park, where they can pick up a map and brochure of participating venues.

Future events may include actor's workshops, dance showcases, comedy shows, poetry and jazz, according to organizers.

This month's Bed-Stuy Art Walk takes place June 6 from noon to 9 p.m. More information on locations and artists can be found here.
