PODCAST: Rockaway Gets Ready for Beach Season With New Boardwalk

By Gwynne Hogan | May 22, 2015 8:40am

This Is New York is a podcast from DNAinfo.

Each episode of This is New York brings you a conversation with a DNAinfo reporter, followed by a story central to their beat.

Today we're headed to the beach — specifically, reporter Katie Honan is taking us to Rockaway.

After much anticipation, the first section of the rebuilt Rockaway boardwalk is nearly completely finished.

Dorothy Lewandowski, the Queens Commissioner of the Parks Department, takes us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the new section of the boardwalk.

Finally, here are some of the suggestions for a visit to the beach that Honan gave during the interview:

► Get coffee at Rockaway Roasters (92-06 Rockaway Beach Blvd.)

► Rent a bike
     • Paul's Bicycle Shop (Open every day at 163 Beach 116th Street)
     • Boarders Surf Shop rents bikes on the boardwalk at Beach 97th Street.

► Explore the abandoned military base at Fort Tilden and see some art at Rockaway Artists Alliance (260 Beach 116th St.)

► Grab a sunset drink at the Bungalow Bar (377 Beach 92nd St.)
