MANHATTAN — A 71-year-old man died after leaping from the 31st floor of an Upper West Side apartment building into rush-hour traffic Tuesday morning, police said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was hit by a Mercedes when he landed on 79th Street near Columbus Avenue about 6:46 a.m., witnesses and officials said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
